Recently I have noticed a distressing trend in this world. For years, I have pointed out to people that the media in general has a responsibility to its readers to pass on the news, but that, in view of their impact, it is necessary for them to focus on the positive side of things, to give people something positive to read and/or experience.
Well, just in the last couple of days I saw something that appalled me in a way I was NOT expecting.
In Calgary Canada, there was a shooting in a locally well-known bar, where the bouncers and patrons jumped in to help. From what I understand, the victim survived, and while the people were striving to get the assailant outside, another assailant jumped in to try to help the first assailant. Fortunately the police arrived and arrested both assailants who were subsequently charged with attempted murder.
The sad part that I discovered was that many people complained that this appallingly violent display was not the headline story, Leo DiCaprio got the center stage.
My hat goes off to all of the media in Calgary for apparently making the arts and entertainment of the world a bigger focus than the fear….thank you all for your help in this regard.
What is important at this time is for people to realize that the media did the right thing: They did report the assault, but they minimized it, which is a great thing. By focusing on the Arts and success they gave the general populace something exciting to talk about, something to look forward to. We all know that negative things happen, but they must be minimized as it takes away from their attention and the fear. This said, congratulations to Leo DiCaprio for his accomplishments.
It is time for the rest of the media around the world to do the same thing, and then for the general public to follow the lead of the media in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on this handling and subsequent emphasis of positive news.
